Strategic Keyword Research That Drives Results
Ranking for keywords nobody searches for is pointless. Targeting keywords too competitive to realistically rank for wastes effort. Good keyword research finds that sweet spot: search terms your target customers actually use, with enough search volume to matter, and competition levels you can realistically beat given your site's current authority. That's what separates keyword research from keyword guessing.
The biggest mistake businesses make is targeting obvious, broad keywords everyone else is chasing. Sure, "web design" gets searches, but so what? You're competing with Wikipedia, massive agencies, and established brands. Meanwhile, "web design for medical clinics in KL" has less volume but much higher intent: people searching that specific phrase are ready to hire, not just browsing. We focus on finding these high-intent keywords where you can actually win.
Our keyword research combines data from multiple sources: Google Keyword Planner, SEMrush, Ahrefs, search console data, and competitor analysis: to build a comprehensive keyword strategy. We don't just hand you a spreadsheet of keywords; we map them to your content, prioritize by opportunity, and create an action plan for targeting them systematically.
Our Keyword Research Process
Understanding Your Business
Before touching any keyword tools, we need to understand what you offer, who your ideal customers are, what problems you solve, and what makes you different from competitors. This context shapes which keywords actually matter for your business.
We look at your current customers: how do they describe what you do? What terms do your sales team hear? What questions come up repeatedly? These insights often reveal keyword opportunities that data alone misses.
Seed Keyword Expansion
We start with obvious seed keywords related to your business, then expand using keyword research tools to find related terms, questions people ask, and long-tail variations. A single seed keyword like "e-commerce" might expand to hundreds of related opportunities.
We analyze Google's autocomplete suggestions, "People Also Ask" boxes, and related searches to find real queries people type. These are goldmines for long-tail keyword ideas.
Search Volume Analysis
Search volume tells us how many people search for each term monthly. But raw numbers deceive: 5,000 monthly searches sounds great until you realize 4,900 are from people looking for something different than what you offer. We evaluate whether search volume reflects genuine demand for your offering.
We also look at seasonal trends. Some keywords spike during certain months or days of the week. Understanding these patterns helps plan content timing.
Competition Assessment
Keyword difficulty scores estimate how hard it is to rank based on the authority of sites currently ranking. But these are just estimates. We manually review top-ranking pages to see if they're actually well-optimized or just ranking by default because nobody else targeted the keyword well.
Sometimes "high difficulty" keywords are beatable if existing content is outdated or poor quality. Other times "easy" keywords are actually dominated by established brands.
Commercial Intent Evaluation
Not all keywords lead to customers. "What is SEO" gets huge search volume but most searchers just want a definition, not to hire an SEO company. "SEO services in KL" has lower volume but sky-high intent. We prioritize keywords where searchers are ready to take action.
We categorize keywords by funnel stage: awareness (just learning), consideration (comparing options), and decision (ready to buy). Different stages need different content approaches.
Keyword Mapping
Each keyword gets assigned to a specific page or planned content. This prevents keyword cannibalization where multiple pages compete for the same term. We create a clear map showing which page targets which keywords, both primary and secondary.
For keywords with no matching page yet, we prioritize content creation based on opportunity: balancing search volume, competition, and relevance to your business goals.
Keyword Types We Target
Head Keywords (Short-Tail)
Broad, high-volume terms usually 1-2 words. Examples: "SEO", "web design", "mobile apps". These are extremely competitive and often vague in intent, but valuable for brand visibility if you can rank. We target these for established sites with strong domain authority.
Pros:
- β’ High search volume
- β’ Brand visibility
- β’ Broad reach
Cons:
- β’ Very competitive
- β’ Unclear intent
- β’ Lower conversion
Best For:
- β’ Established brands
- β’ Awareness campaigns
- β’ High authority sites
Body Keywords (Medium-Tail)
More specific terms, 2-3 words. Examples: "SEO services Malaysia", "e-commerce web design", "iPhone app development". These balance search volume with specificity, offering realistic ranking opportunities while still attracting meaningful traffic.
Pros:
- β’ Moderate volume
- β’ Clearer intent
- β’ Achievable rankings
Target:
- β’ Service pages
- β’ Category pages
- β’ Main offerings
Best For:
- β’ Most businesses
- β’ Primary targets
- β’ Core strategy
Long-Tail Keywords
Highly specific phrases, usually 4+ words. Examples: "affordable web design for restaurants in KL", "SEO services for small businesses Selangor". Lower search volume but much higher conversion rates because intent is crystal clear. Collectively, long-tail keywords often drive more traffic than head terms.
Pros:
- β’ Lower competition
- β’ High conversion
- β’ Specific intent
Target:
- β’ Blog posts
- β’ FAQ pages
- β’ Niche offerings
Best For:
- β’ New sites
- β’ Quick wins
